It was in the summer of '76 in a County Derry town,
A
British hunting party were waiting around,
To
gather more for hostage and to lock some more away,
But
a daring Machiavellian came to make them pay.
To
Castlereagh they took them, they were tortured day and night,
To
try and force confessions they denied them human rights.
They
done all to break them, to make their struggle wrong,
With
defiance in his eyes one young man stood strong
"I
am so proud to serve my cause, for you I have no fear,"
"I
will not bend I will not bow, your lies I do not hear!"
"Im
Irish and Gaelic and my spirits free"
"Im
proud of my nation you will not break me!"
Sentenced
in a diplock court, to the H-Blocks they made him go,
Naked
with only a blanket, the years they passed so slow,
Interned
and forgotten and tortured to their glee
To
criminalise a struggle, but one man would not yield.
For
five long years he suffered all that they could give,
His
comrades then decided that no longer would they live,
Deprived
of all necessities they took their final stand,
And
behind them their country came as their Hunger Strike began.
"I
grieve in sorrow for my friends who before me passed away"
"I
will not bend I will not bow as my life now it fades"
"Im
Irish and Gaelic and my spirits free"
"Farewell
to you my family- Dont give in Derry!"
